Costa Rica New Projects vs. Electricity

Light Bulb

We know by now that Costa Rica has plenty of professionals ready to prove their skills in any job, we also know that the international community is aware of the great economic potential this Central American country has to offer, and we all know as well of the big boom the Costa Rica real estate market is experiencing.

Everything sounds good so far; but what about the electric power?

More Buildings translate not only in more job opportunities but also will increase the electric demands for Costa Rica; that is the reason why the government is putting several geothermal projects into action.

The first one was created in 1980 under the name Miravalles, and provides a critical share of Costa Rica’s base load power. The New addition to this initiative is known as Las Pailas, located in Liberia in the Guanacaste area, this project currently produces 35 MW 24 hours a day seven days a week.

GeothermEX and POWER are the ones responsible for the creation of the Las Pailas project; and I am quite sure that they certainly have quite a lot of new projects to propose to the Costa Rican Government, that is currently looking for new alternatives to deal with the future power requirements of the country.

Costa Rica’s goal on power consumption is to create more projects focusing on renewable sources to eventually become “Diesel free”, this means more geothermal plants, and new designs for more hydroelectric plants as well.

So let’s take a quick look at the numbers!

The cost for each KW produced by a Diesel powered plant is $.0.13; while each KW produced by Hydro power is $0.03 (That is 10 times cheaper)

An electric turbine produces 800 tones of carbon Dioxide per hour; while the Hydro turbine barely reaches 20 tons. (That is a huge difference)

As we advance through the year and more developing projects approach the Costa Rica lands, the demand for electricity will keep going up; and despite the different campaigns for a better utilization of the electric fluid, the need for more power will rise.

This is a great opportunity for international companies specialized in renewable power solutions, for the coming of new developing projects in Costa Rica will certainly require more energy.

The Costa Rica International Arts Festival 2008

Ok I have to admit this is one of my favorite events of the year; and even though it is not related to business development in Costa Rica, it is a must see not only for me; but for my family as well.

The Costa Rica International Arts Festival is an event that displays the best of Costa Rican theater, music, poetry, visual arts and host 70 international figures from 20 countries.

This 11th edition of the International Arts Festival brings to Costa Rica the talent of performers like Rosario Flores (Singer from Spain), El Choque Urbano (A group from Argentina) a dance fantasy from France by the group Retouramont, and the one my wife likes the most, Spanish Flamenco by the group Antonio El Pipa.

Costa Rica’s Grammy winners Editus, the National Dance Company, and famous singer Adrian Goizueta will be among the most recognizable Costa Rican figures on the festival.

But wait there is still more!

There will be an especial guest country for this event, and that is none other than The People’s Republic of China. (Yes I know what you are thinking, I have my own comments on this one but I will remain quiet) A small “Chinese Pavilion” will be set up in La Sabana Park; there the people will be able to see performances of traditional Chinese art forms such as Beijing opera, a form of traditional Chinese theater that combines music, vocal performance, mime, dance and acrobatics.

The Costa Rica International Arts Festival will be held from April the 11th to April 20th, it is absolutely free and the main places to go and enjoy its presentations will be the city of San Jose, Alajuela, and the lovely port city of Puntarenas.

I’m really looking forward to enjoy this event with my family and friends, it will be a blast, so if any of you guys were looking for something to see during this month, this is one of the best options in Costa Rica, enjoy it people!
