Building a Home in Costa Rica

So I have hired all my staff for the construction of my Guanacaste housing project, the construction will begin in about 3 weeks worst case scenario and will last probably somewhere between 2 and 3 months. Already I am receiving emails from readers interested in the housing project and that makes me happy.

Guanacaste is definitely a former rural location developing into a big city, although there are a lot of companies, constructions and what not expanding to this location, it is quite impressive to see how everything is blending in with the beautiful sceneries in the area. Real estate in Guanacaste is becoming more and more popular, but that doesn’t surprise me, I mean who wouldn’t want to buy a home in Costa Rica? Close to the ocean and at great prices?

Buying the construction materials will be the next step to take, my architects, being locals and knowledgeable of the possible choices available in Costa Rica and basically all over Guanacaste, will help me with this getting different offers from the places they know carry good products.

I will probably begin with all the advertising of the properties in a few weeks before the construction is done. Maybe I won’t even need to since I have noticed that a lot of people are already interested in renting property in Guanacaste. Anyways, I am happy that my Guanacaste housing project will be doing well without even having it built.

I can’t believe it all started with a random idea o going ahead and buy a home in Costa Rica and leave everything behind that I thought was so crazy.

Costa Rica and the Earth Hour

Earth Hour Costa RicaHelping save the earth and our environment is everyone’s business, even for a small country such as Costa Rica. This Saturday the WWF has organized an activity that will take place all over the world to help give a moment of peace to the earth.

The Earth Hour is an activity that has taken place for three years now and the whole idea is to turn off every electrical appliance, lights, computers and such to help the earth “breathe” a little. San Jose, Costa Rica will be one of the main cities where the Earth Hour will take place, although everyone in Costa Rica is encouraged to turn off their electrical power for an hour as well.

The Earth Hour will start at 8:30pm and will end at 9:30 pm Costa Rica time, however in San Jose there will be shows and performances at the beautiful Plaza de la Democracia since 7:30 pm to encourage people to get out of their homes and leave the lights off.

This year a total of 83 countries will participate in the Earth Hour and they expect that at least 1.000 million people from all over the world join the cause. To think it all started only 3 years ago in one country. In Costa Rica people have been talking about it and are definitely preparing for the moment they will turn everything off to help the earth. I certainly hope that the initiative of the Earth Hour attracts twice as much people next year.

I have spoken to friends here in Guanacaste and basically everyone will join the Earth Hour, some neighbors have even planned small parties in their homes with candles and acoustic instruments to spend the evening with the lights off.

So remember, if you are in Costa Rica this next Saturday, the schedule for the Earth Hour initiative will be set at 8:30 pm until 9:30 pm: turn off the lights in your hotel room, beach villa and if you are outside encourage everyone to do it.

More Earthquakes in Costa Rica

Boxing match at Transitarte 2007Yesterday was a very scary day in Costa Rica: new earthquakes were felt in the southern coasts, Cartago and San Jose during the afternoon hours, scaring people all over the country. Just two months ago Costa Rica suffered one of the worst earthquakes in history in the province of Alajuela where hundreds of people lost their homes, one of the most impressive Costa Rica national parks were buried and several people were found dead.

The three main earthquakes showed Richter scale of 6, 5.2 and 5 degrees all located near the Golfito area in Puntarenas on the southern region of Costa Rica very near to Panama. So far no great damages have been reported besides from some stuff that fell to the ground from shelves and no people injured at all. Costa Rica earthquakes have very common because of the many volcanoes found in the country; locals are mostly used to having a few shakes however big earthquakes like these really make people jumpy.

These specific earthquakes were not felt in Guanacaste whatsoever, so everything is pretty much normal on this side of Costa Rica. Tourism has raised a lot since the cold temperatures are finally gone and as far as my Guanacaste housing project everything seems to be going right on schedule. I couldn’t ask for more.

If you are in San Jose this weekend make room for several shows and presentations that will be taking place in the main parks down town with the Costa Rica arts fair “Transitarte” which will be going on all weekend with belly dancers, bands, boxing matches and souvenirs sales among many other activities, all in San Jose down town. Tomorrow I will make sure I bring some more information about it.

Building a home in Guanacaste

Today I will browse around for construction materials, one of the architects is here in Guanacaste to assist me and I have to admit I am pretty excited about it. Although the final blueprints are not entirely done, I wanted to check out materials, tiles, finishing touches and details available to start working on the look I would like to portray in the housing project. Guanacaste is also having the best weather right now.

Real estate agents in Guanacaste have also started contacting me to see exactly what is it that I am going to be offering but I am not sure I want to start giving away information so fast. The real estate market in Guanacaste is very much in demand so brokers are always on top of every single business that comes up. Costa Rica is indeed a paradise for real estate investors: cheap properties with luxury materials and awesome design in a heavenly location could only profit.

Actually thinking further into it I think I would like to handle this business by myself and not with a real estate company, might be harder and might take up much of my time, but it might be worth it. Any ways it is only a thought, at the end real estate agents know the business way better and I am just a newbie in the subject. Guanacaste real estate is in fact a huge market and maybe I can really used some else’s expertise.

House Hunters Costa Rica

The very well known HGTV show House Hunters will be showing some chapters filmed in Costa Rica in the next few weeks, another good prove that the real estate market in Costa Rica is top notch international material.

In the show people from all over the world get together with a real estate agent who shows them three choices for them to check out and at the end they choose one of the properties for sale to buy according to their necessities and requirements.

This season House Hunters will be airing shows from different sides of the world including London and Asia, as well as Costa Rica. Properties offered in the show will be from very common places in Costa Rica where real estate is in high demand including Santa Ana in San Jose and probably some beach locations. So far I have no received information on whether or not Guanacaste real estate will be featured on these shows or not.

To be honest, I am really happy that Costa Rica real estate is being featured in such an important TV Network as HGTV the show House Hunters is one of the most watched of the cable network and this will show the lovely side of real estate in Costa Rica I am actually working on. I certainly hope a lot of people watch it and enjoy it.

I do know that in one of the episodes, they will featured some Santa Ana properties in San Jose, it is a very nice place to live, has lovely weather and is close to both down town and some beautiful coastal areas of Costa Rica.

Building a House Project in Guanacaste

So today I sent back the blue prints the architects sent me a few days ago with a couple of changes. I have to admit that they did an awesome work putting together everything I have thought of in paper, yet after looking at it I realized a few things needed to be a bit different to work better. Building a housing project in Guanacaste is definitely an interesting experience.

A few years ago Guanacaste was a normal rural area in Costa Rica, beach related town with country people, hard land workers mostly, yet after the tourism business grew in the area and more and people started investing in small vacations villas and huge luxury hotels, Costa Rica grew its economy with it. Liberia then had an international airport and the amount of visitors increased relentlessly.

The good thing is that since the beginning, real estate developers in Costa Rica were clear on the ecological preservation issue and have been trying to keep the place clean and the national reservations of Guanacaste untouched. The province has sure grown into a main city, but the beauty of the place is still the main attraction. My housing project in Guanacaste is part of that now and I want it to be an addition to the pristine scenery of the area, not ruin it.

I like the place I live in, Guanacaste has brought peace into my life and a new way seeing retirement, I feel part of the nature, the people and the traditions and those are important things in life, I want to offer that other people relocating to Guanacaste and not mess with it, therefore the changes I sent to the architects were definitely necessary, I truly hope they understand the reasons I have to make them.

My Costa Rica property

A Finca in GuanacasteSo, I have great news about my real estate investment in Guanacaste: my offer was accepted and now the payment process has begun. I have to admit I got overly excited when the real estate agent called me to give me the news and I made a small toast and celebration with the family, I am also very happy with the way things worked out and haw fast and easy was the entire process.

Buying land in Guanacaste did require a lot of search and I did took my time to do everything, like any other real estate deal, I had professionals working with me and got a lot of “second opinions”. For now, I will be focusing in working with the architects to design a nice looking housing project, Guanacaste is full of great architects and home designers so, I will be working with a few of them to see which one hits the target.

I would like the housing project to be something in between an apartment complex and a beach villa, although it is not located at the beach, I would like to capture the feeling of Guanacaste and provide that peaceful feeling I have living in my own Guanacaste beach home. The process might be a bit slow but I am sure I will make the best of it…after all, if you want something close to perfect, patience and hard work are the keys.

This will be my second adventure buying real estate in Guanacaste, the first one was when I bought my current home, but it was already built and ready to move in, this one I am taking from the beginning and I plan to enjoy it as much as possible. Properties in Guanacaste are hot in the market right now, so this should not be difficult.

Container Homes in Costa Rica

Cinchona, Alajuela after the EarthquakeApparently people in Costa Rica have now been obligated to give it a chance to container homes: Due to the many homes lost during the past earthquake in Costa Rica, some private entities have donated several containers to be set up as temporary homes, kitchens and laundry rooms in the refuges set up in the Cinchona and Vara Blanca areas.

The INCOFER, entity in charge of the Tren Urbano in San Jose, Costa Rica’s only working train, donated a couple of weeks ago 25 containers to be used as temporary homes for some of the families that lost everything in the Poas Earthquake and now it seems that several private companies came together and donated another thirteen containers to be set up as laundry rooms and kitchens in the refuges where there are still several families that have nowhere else to go.

Costa Rica has shown that whenever there is trouble everyone has to help and people are actually glad to be of help even hotels in Guanacaste and other companies in the area conducted small donations marathons to send over to the people in need in Alajuela, commercial places donated their earnings and several places set up stands to collect food goods and clothes.

It’s been three weeks after the earthquake in Costa Rica and although things are going back to normal very slowly, people are still very scared, especially since after that big one, small earthquakes were felt in Guanacaste and some other areas in the country. Rumors say that people in the OVSICORI are actually expecting a bigger earthquake in the next few weeks but have not released any info to avoid panic. That one I don’t believe, but that only shows that people in Costa Rica are definitely still scared.

Great News for Guanacaste Tourism

This week Oriens Travel and Hotel Management made a huge step by including Guanacaste into their Luxury and affordable Hotels List on their website www.HotelPURE.com. They recently consummated a contract withLiberia International Airport Guanacaste Tourism Chamber that will provide assistance and service to all incoming visitors into the Liberia International Airport.

This alliance will increase the quality of services provided to Guanacaste visitors which roughly 50% arrive into the Costa Rica for vacation with no prior accommodation arrangements. They are also featuring some Guanacaste hotels in their website so people can get information beforehand if they need to. In the past the Guanacaste Chamber of tourism only had a booth where incoming visitors could receive brochures from different hotels in Guanacaste and would take care of booking by themselves, now with Oriens’ assistance they will be able to receive a better service where they can choose a hotel and booking will be made instantly by the Chamber’s staff.

I do have to admit that I find it really strange when people go on vacations to a foreign country without making previous hotel reservations, but apparently it is more common than I thought. Guanacaste hotels have different choices and price ranges and you can find everything for a small cabin to a huge ocean view villa or luxury hotels. Costa Rica is one of the most visited countries in Latin America and the paradise like atmosphere brings back visitors over and over again, some of those visitors never leave and begin looking for real estate in Costa Rica after a few visits, I should know.

This alliance will make things faster and better both for people vacationing in Guanacaste and the Chamber of tourism itself and hopefully it will increase the tourism traffic in the area as well.
